Pet CBD products for dogs and cats

CBD for pets is much like CBD for humans. CBD products for pets usually come in tinctures or edibles such as dog and cat treats. There is even LESS research done in animals. The research to date, however, indicates that CBD is safe for animals including dogs and cats

Isolate Pet Tinctures

Isolates contain only CBD and they should be safe to use with both cats and dogs. If the products are true tinctures, you may want to avoid the alcohol and stick to the oils. However, animals can be pretty stubborn if they don’t like the taste of the liquid—you may very well end up with more ON you than your pet has IN him/her. Some companies use fish or bacon flavored oils and your pet may be more likely to consume the CBD. Some manufacturers recommend adding the oils to the pet's food.

Most Potent Pet Products

Potency—the amount (in mgs) of CBD per unit—doesn’t necessarily relate to effectiveness. In other words, more is NOT always better! For pets, we recommend the same approach we do for YOU—Start low and go slow. Always check the 3rd party lab reports—you love your pet friend and want to ensure they are getting a pure and contaminant-free product. There is still a lot we don’t know about the effects of CBD on animals. If are looking for higher potency for your pet from any reason, at this section picked the best socre high potency pet products

You use CBD for pets for the same reasons a person might use CBD-- to find relief from pain, sleep issues, depression, or anxiety or just to calm your pet down.CBD won’t get them “high” but can provide some significant relief.

Pet CBD products FAQs

Answered By
Zora Degrandpre, MS, ND.
  • Can you use human CBD for pets?
Yes, in theory. However, if you are using an edible, the flavors added may make a pet product easier to use—for you and your pet! Avoid any products which contain THC, though– THC can affect dogs (we don’t know about cats) and possible side effects include diarrhea, depression, vomiting, increased or more frequent urination, loss of muscle coordination and tremor. Liver function in dogs can be affected as well.
  • CBD for pets – What does it help with?
CBD has been used to help pets with anxiety, fear, stress, behavioral issues, mild to severe pain, muscle tension, osteoarthritis, muscle spasms, tremors, epilepsy, diabetes regulation, and Irritable bowel disease (IBD).
  • Will CBD have negative interactions with other pet medications?
It may. You should talk to your vet before using CBD on any animal. In general, some effects of prescription medications may be enhanced (eg. Greater sedation) while other effects may be reduced.
  • Does CBD Help with anxiety?
Yes. CBD inhibits an enzyme called Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase, or FAAH, which is responsible for breaking down an endocannabinoid called Anandamide. Ananda- is Sanskrit for joy or bliss and helps with elevated mood. People with anxiety may have lower levels of anandamide. Introducing CBD can help decrease the reuptake of anandamide and cause it to hang around longer which could decrease anxiety symptoms. CBD is also thought to stimulate serotonin receptors. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in mental health. Having insufficient serotonin can also contribute to anxiety. CBD may be a viable option for those suffering with anxiety disorders.
  • Will CBD make my pet high?
No—CBD is non-intoxicating and won’t get your pet “high”.
  • Can I give my CBD to dogs/cats?
CBD appears to be safe for both dogs and cats, as far as we know.
  • How does CBD works in a pet’s system?
All mammals (including Fido the Dog and Purry the Cat) have an endocannabinoid system which helps regulate a wide range of actions including sensation and perception of pain, appetite, sleep cycles, the immune system and other systems. CBD works—at least in part—by increasing the levels of the natural substances (endocannabinoids) that they already have in their systems.
  • How much CBD should I give my pet?
We recommend you Start Low and Go Slow. Start with the lowest amount you can easily measure (eg. ¼ of an edible) and increase slowly, waiting at least 2-3 hours between doses and 2-3 days before changing the dose. Keep track of how your pet responds.
  • Is CBD safe for your pets?
As far as the data tells us, yes, CBD is safe for pets. You should try talking to your vet, but be aware that the laws around vets using CBD are even less clear than those concerning humans and your vet may not feel comfortable talking about CBD.
  • Does CBD help pets with stress?
Yes. Start Low and Go Slow until you find the right dose. Make sure you understand what the effects of stress are on your pet and try and remove any and all stressors they may have.
  • Does CBD help pets with anxiety?
Yes. Start Low and Go Slow until you find the right dose. Don’t forget that one of the best anti-anxiety approaches for animals is to give them some love!

question= Does CBD help pets with sleep disorders?

  • Does CBD help pets with pain?
Yes. Start Low and Go Slow until you find the right dose. Pain response can be difficult to assess with some pets – so figure out a good “readout” before you start. One readout might be that your pet’s appetite improves, sleep improves or they are more eager to play with you.
