Why you can trustlogo

  • Leafreport's mission is to provide accurate, objective, and valuable content for CBD, which is why we're transparent about our review process  and  how we rate products and brands. We may receive compensation. Here’s how we make money.
  • Our review is consumer-focused only and we do not check or take a stand regarding medical effects.
  • Statements regarding CBD products have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Please advise your physician prior to each use of CBD.

The Bottom Line

My review of Austin and Kat is very good based on their organic hemp quality — which is in the process of becoming USDA certified, their sustainable farming methods, their available extract options, and their highly accurate lab results. They publish the exact potency and purity for each product on a centralized lab report hub for easy customer reference, but their product catalog is quite limited, including only pet products at this time.

They offer premium quality, organic, broad and full spectrum CBD products that are pesticide free and non-GMO. They are available in pet tinctures and pet edible bites that range from $24.95 to $99.95, with an average price point of $.17. This means that Austin and Kat’s product prices are higher than average, when compared to other organic brands in the market that are GMP compliant. They offer free shipping on orders that are $50 and above, and they offer a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee on all orders.

The accuracy variances for these Austin and Kat products concerning potency are excellent, with both products testing well below the acceptable 10% variance limit allowed. Their products passed standard purity testing for microbial contaminants. However, lab test results for heavy metals and pesticides were unavailable at this time. Human grade, authentic food ingredients are used in these organic Austin and Kat pet CBD products, with nothing artificial used during manufacturing or formulation, according to the company.

Awards

Methodology

  • Read our methodology for more details about ranking and our review process.

    Data Collection and Rating

In our review process, we receive CBD products directly from the brand to personally review ourselves, so we can give you an accurate idea of the packaging, potency, taste, smell, feel, and overall experience of each product. We also discuss the company’s shipping and returns policy.
Another important step we take is reviewing each individual product for details such as the certificate of analysis to assess the CBD level and CBD variance, THC level, and contaminants.
We take all factors into account and give each CBD brand and each CBD product a score for each parameter.
All of the information we collect is generated into a concise, easy to read review and put into our extensive database. Keep in mind, our reviews are never intended to substitute or act as medical advice.

    Product DataBase

Our database collects key information for each product, including CBD product prices, potencies, third-party lab test results, flavors, additional ingredients, hemp quality, extract types, product variety, and more.
We then use all of this combined data to give each brand and product a standardized rating out of five points.

    Brand Review Process

There are many factors we consider when we review the quality, integrity and products of a CBD brand. We rate each brand on several factors including:

    • Transparency & accuracy. It is important that a CBD brand is forthcoming with who makes up their team, their mission, manufacturing process, and lab reports. Also, we look for the accuracy of the CBD and THC levels in the products’ lab reports.
    • Hemp quality. Hemp quality can be a deciding factor between a good CBD brand and a great CBD brand. We look for organic and sustainable farming methods with attention to detail in each manufacturing step.
    • The variety of products they offer. We like to see several CBD product types and flavors.
    • Customer service. It is essential that each CBD company has multiple ways to connect to customer service to ask questions. We look for speedy and complete responses.
    • Price and discounts. Competitive pricing is an important aspect of being a top-rated CBD brand. We also look for discount options and ways to save on your order.

    Market Reports

Another way Leafreport stands out from other CBD review websites is our evidence-based market reports. For each one, we purchase different types of CBD products and send them for independent lab testing to check whether their levels of CBD and other cannabinoids match the label.

    Information Updates

Writers and editors conduct our reviews and our database on an annual basis but continually make updates throughout the year. We maintain frequent contact with brands and highlight any changes in offerings.

    The Review Team

Our review team is made up of a wide chain of qualified CBD review writers, some with medical degrees, some with statistics backgrounds, others with ample experience in the CBD arena. Each and every one of our CBD reviews are approved by our medical reviewer before being published on our website to ensure all information is accurate.

    Conflicts of Interest

While Leafreport does have partnerships with many of the reviewed brands, we manage potential conflicts of interest by maintaining a wall between our content and business operations. This wall is designed to prevent our writers and the review process from being influenced or impacted by our business partnerships. This way, all reviews can provide an unbiased review that serves the interests of our users.

  • At Leafreport, we order and test the products ourselves

    About the Company

Austin and Kat is a small, family owned and operated company that was founded in 2014 by Kat Donatello to find all natural solutions to help her dog, Austin, live a healthier and happy life. She established the company “to share my recipe with owners looking to give their pets the best life that they can.”

According to the company website, Kat refines her recipe with every batch made, creating blends that offer the “right amount” of CBD for dogs in every stage of life. Kat’s beloved pet Austin is the CPT, or Chief Product Tester, so she named the company ‘Austin and Kat’ as a tribute to him.

    Transparency

Independent CBD testing is an invaluable quality and safety control measure to ensure that the labeled amounts of CBD and THC are very close to the contents of each final product a customer receives. All of the products in my Austin and Kat order were third party tested for CBD and THC potency and microbial contaminants, but none were purity tested for heavy metals and pesticides, to the best of our knowledge.

Using the “Lab Tests,” link provided, Austin and Kat customers can view all available third party lab reports for their CBD product catalog in one centralized location:

    Accuracy

Using the “Lab Tests” link, it was easy to match the products with the independent third party lab reports provided. As far as the highest accuracy variance in this order, the 450 mg organic, broad spectrum ‘No Wiggles’ pet tincture tested with 471 total mg of CBD, which represents a 4.6% accuracy variance, lower than the acceptable 10% limit.

The lowest accuracy variance was found in the 300 mg full spectrum, organic Austin’s Active pet bites , which tested as containing 293.4 total mg of CBD, or 9.78 per chew. This is an accuracy variance of 2.2% and well below the 10% variance limit allowed, as seen here in the COA provided online:

    undefined

All products were confirmed by independent third party testing to contain less than the legal 0.3% limit of THC or a non-detectable amount, and purity tests for microbes were passed. However, to the best of our knowledge, lab reports for pesticides and heavy metals were unavailable at this time.

    Reputation

With more than 15 years as an athlete and business leader in the endurance sports industry, Kat Donatello set out in 2014 to use her skills to create an all natural, holistic product that would help her dogs with their health, well being and various ailments. She started in her own kitchen and has expanded into a national pet CBD product leader, based on their company’s ‘Our Story’ page online.

    undefined
In the past few years, Austin and Kat CBD has expanded far beyond their initial e-commerce platform, as they are now distributing and selling in numerous physical retail locations as of December 2020.

    Leafreport’s market reports score

Transparency report – Austin and Kat was listed in the (top 10 most transparent and accurate brands In potency and purity) or (the top 40 transparent brands that tested 95% or more of their products for potency) according to our transparency report, where we checked the advertised lab results of almost 3000 products from 135 different brands.

Pet products report –  Austin and Kat received a A score in our pet products report where we tested 55 pet products in an independent lab.

    Manufacturing Process

Austin and Kat use Treehouse Hemp, the first National Animal Supplement Council preferred hemp supplier. Austin and Kat’s broad spectrum hemp is extracted using a CO2 process before being formulated with easily digestible MCT oil as the carrier for maximum bioavailability.

After formulation, the next step is independent third party CBD testing, which is an important quality and safety control measure utilized by Austin and Kat to ensure that the labeled potency of CBD and THC matches the contents. They conduct independent purity and potency lab testing for all of their products and post the available results online:

They offer premium quality, organic, broad spectrum CBD products that are available in pet tinctures and pet edible bites. Their products range from 2 mg to 1200 mg, and are higher priced than comparable premium organic brands, with an overall average price point of $.17 per mg of CBD.
