CBD is a non-intoxicating substance with a wide range of reported health benefits. People use CBD for anxiety, pain, and inflammation, to name a few uses. In order to use CBD safely, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before using it. It’s also important to only ever use products from legitimate, reputable CBD brands – use high-quality, safe products only.

Shopping for CBD can be tricky. It’s difficult to know which brands are legitimate and which are sub-par. This can make the shopping experience quite overwhelming, especially for those who are new to CBD.

To help you choose the ideal product for your needs, we’ve compiled a list of the best CBD oils available in the UK. Each oil comes from a reputable CBD company that is either based in the UK or sells products in the UK.

How to choose the best CBD oil

Before you purchase a CBD oil from a specific brand, consider the following:

  • Third-party testing: In order to verify whether CBD products actually contain what the label says they contain, it’s important that a company has their products third-party tested. This means that an independent lab will confirm the contents of the product.
  • Type of CBD: There are three kinds of CBD: isolate, broad-spectrum CBD, and full-spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum CBD contains all cannabinoids found in the plant, including a small amount of THC. Broad-spectrum CBD contains all cannabinoids except for THC. CBD isolate is CBD alone without any other cannabinoids or terpenes.
  • Plant-based: CBD itself is vegan-friendly. However, many CBD products contain added ingredients that could be derived from animals. For example, some gummies contain bovine gelatin and some topicals contain honey or beeswax. CBD oils are usually vegan, but not all companies specify this. Many brands are cruelty-free and vegan-friendly, so if you’re vegan, look out for those.
  • Price: Naturally, prices will vary from product to product. In order to get the most value for money, we recommend calculating the cost per milligram of CBD. This enables you to compare products accurately. Bear in mind that products with added ingredients tend to be more expensive, as do water-soluble CBD products. Some brands offer free shipping, rewards programs, subscribe-and-save options, and discounts, which can make them more affordable.
  • The fine print: Does the company offer a money-back guarantee? What’s their return policy? If you’re experimenting with a new CBD brand, this is something to consider.
  • Company reputation: Last but certainly not least, you’ll obviously want to choose a company that has a positive reputation. Take a look at their reviews – not just the ones on their website, but also third-party sites and social media. What do people say about their customer service and product quality?

If you’d like more help deciding which product to buy, Leaf Report has created a detailed guide on choosing CBD products.

Safety and side effects

The available research tells us that CBD is safe for human consumption. But this doesn’t mean there can’t be any side effects. Some people experience the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea

In order to avoid the side effects of CBD, it’s worth doing your research to ensure that you’re purchasing products from a legitimate brand. Sub-par products can contain additives that might cause an adverse reaction.

We also recommend discussing CBD with your doctor before you use it yourself. This is important if you’re on any sort of medication, especially prescription medication, as CBD might interact with certain drugs.

Legality

CBD is legal in the UK. However, it must be derived from an industrial hemp strain that is EU-approved, or it must come from outside the EU. In order for a CBD product to be legal in the UK, it must contain less than 0.2% THC. For context, the threshold in the US is 0.3% THC.

THC can show up on drug tests. Although full-spectrum CBD products with less than 0.2% THC will probably not result in a positive drug test, we recommend you err on the side of caution if you know you’ll be tested for drugs. In this case, opt for THC-free products, such as broad-spectrum CBD or CBD isolate.
