How to choose the best CBD vape oils and pens

Keep these tips in mind when looking for the right, high-quality CBD vape juice or pen:

• Third-party testing: Reputable brands send their products for testing at an independent lab to verify their potency and purity. You should only buy third-party tested products.
• Type of CBD: There are three kinds of CBD; isolate, full-spectrum, and broad-spectrum. Research suggests that full-spectrum CBD is the most effective because it contains all of the cannabinoids and terpenes found in cannabis. However, if you need to avoid THC, opt for isolate or broad-spectrum products.
• Ingredients: Most CBD vapes contain CBD isolate and flavoring dissolved in a base of vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). Sometimes, terpenes or whole-plant hemp extract are added. Check the ingredients list to avoid potentially harmful substances such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) and MCT oil.
• Product type: Beginners are best suited by disposable vape pens or vape kits, whereas experienced vapers may prefer to buy CBD e-liquid.
• Potency: potency is the concentration of CBD in a product (milligrams per milliliter for vape oil). After you figure out what CBD dosage works best for you, look for a vape product that provides at least that much CBD per ml.
• Price: CBD is not cheap, especially if you’re taking it daily. Be sure to look at the price per mg of CBD to compare different products and see if you’re getting a good deal.

Safety and side effects

According to the research, CBD is a safe compound with few and minor side effects. Studies report that the most common side effects of CBD are:

• Tiredness and drowsiness
• Diarrhea and nausea
• Low blood pressure and lightheadedness
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Dry mouth

CBD can also interact with many prescription drugs, so it’s best to talk to your doctor before using it. Still, these and other potential side effects are associated with very large oral doses of purified CBD. This means they’re unlikely to occur for most CBD users.

However, there are some risks associated with vaping. Most notably, a comprehensive 2018 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that vaping can produce potentially toxic substances such as formaldehyde.

Similarly, a 2020 review paper concluded that “the current scientific consensus is that e-cigarettes are probably safer than conventional cigarettes, but e-cigarettes are not without harm…Taking up vaping is not safe.”

It’s also possible for low-quality vape products to contain potentially harmful additives, such as phytol.

Legality

Hemp-derived CBD products (with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC) are federally legal in the United States. However, a few states have more restrictive laws. Some ban CBD completely or only allow THC-free products, so it’s best to research the particular state you’re curious about.
