  • Leafreport's mission is to provide accurate, objective, and valuable content for CBD, which is why we're transparent about our review process  and  how we rate products and brands. We may receive compensation. Here’s how we make money.

Best CBD Oils and Tinctures

You’ve probably heard of cannabidiol (CBD), the beneficial, non-intoxicating cannabis compound. CBD is most commonly used in the form of CBD oil that can be applied under the tongue.

However, finding effective CBD oil is not an easy task. There are thousands of products and not all of them are high-quality.

Besides, you have to consider other factors, such as potency, price, and the type of product you want to use.

That’s why we compared hundreds of tinctures to find the best CBD oils.

How we chose

We chose these CBD oils from a list of over 3000 CBD products and 150 brands, comparing them by third-party lab test results, hemp quality, reputation, price, and other criteria. We also made sure to include different types of CBD oil to suit everyone’s needs.

For a full explanation of how we choose products for our best lists, check out this page.

All of our content is written and reviewed by a team of medical doctors, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, and other health experts knowledgeable about CBD and cannabis.

Note: Technically speaking, the term “tincture” refers to health products where the active ingredient is dissolved in alcohol. However, in the CBD industry, “tincture” means the same thing as CBD oil.

Methodology: How we chose the best CBD oil

When choosing CBD products, we consider multiple factors to find the most affordable, effective, and safe options. We also conduct our own independent research by buying and sending products for third-party testing.

Here’s a closer look at our process.

Data collection and rating

We check products directly from brands so we can try them out before writing reviews and making recommendations. Leafreport collects data on each CBD product, including its price, CBD extract type, additional ingredients, hemp quality, and third-party lab test reports.

Using these criteria, we give each product and CBD brand an objective rating, which also acts as a quick, unbiased review. Leafreport’s database provides information and ratings for thousands of CBD products from hundreds of brands, making it easy to search and compare different options.

Our ultimate goal is to empower consumers with the information needed to make an educated buying decision in a confusing industry.

Market reports

Another way Leafreport stands out from other CBD review websites is our evidence-based market reports. For each one, we purchase different types of CBD products and send them for independent lab testing to check whether their levels of CBD and other cannabinoids match the label.

For example, we recently did a report on CBD product transparency and used our findings to help put together this list.

Review process

We consider several criteria when reviewing CBD products. Each of the below areas is given an unbiased score, which adds up to a maximum of 100 points altogether:

  • Quality assurance. We check third-party lab test reports to see if the product’s levels of CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids match the label.
  • Hemp quality. We look for products made from organic, pesticide-free, sustainably grown hemp, giving extra points for USDA organic certification.
  • Extract type. CBD comes in three types: full, broad-spectrum, and isolate. Full-spectrum products are considered the most effective thanks to providing a full range of hemp cannabinoids and other beneficial compounds.
  • Additional ingredients. Many CBD products contain additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and added active ingredients such as melatonin and CBN.
  • Prices. We’ve measured the prices of 5000 CBD products, giving each a corresponding grade and rating depending on how cheap or expensive they are.

Content updates

We review CBD products on an annual basis and continually make updates throughout the year to provide the most accurate and helpful information. For example, we update our product recommendations whenever CBD brands change, discontinue, or offer new products.

Our review team

Leafreport’s review team is made up of professional writers knowledgeable about the CBD industry. Many of our contributors have medical degrees, statistical knowledge, and other relevant experience. Additionally, every Leafreport review is thoroughly vetted by medical reviewers to ensure accurate, science-based information.

Conflicts of interest

While Leafreport does have partnerships with many of the reviewed brands, they don’t affect our writers or the review process. We don’t receive any compensation for writing reviews and our goal is always to provide unbiased information. That’s why you’ll find many negative reviews on our website.

Some people find that CBD oil with higher (but still legal) THC levels is a better option for relaxation and physical relief. The reserve CBD oil from PlusCBD offers a high ratio of CBD to THC, with 50 mg of CBD and 2.5 mg of THC per dose. That’s about as much THC as you can get in a legal CBD product.

PlusCBD is one of the pioneers of the American CBD industry. How to choose the best CBD oils

If you want to find the best CBD oil, you should consider these factors:

  • Third party testing: Reputable brands send their products for testing at an independent lab to verify their potency and purity. You should only buy third party tested products.
  • Type of CBD: There are three kinds of CBD; isolate, full spectrum, and broad spectrum. Research suggests that full spectrum CBD is the most effective because it contains all of the cannabinoids and terpenes found in cannabis. However, if you need to avoid THC, opt for isolate or broad-spectrum products.
  • Potency: potency is the concentration of CBD in a tincture (milligrams per milliliter). After you figure out what CBD dosage works best for you, look for a CBD oil that provides at least that much CBD per ml.
  • Price: CBD is not cheap, especially if you’re taking it daily. Be sure to look at the price per mg of CBD to compare different products and see if you’re getting a good deal.

These criteria are just a starting point. Check out our detailed guide for a full explanation of how to find reputable CBD companies and choose the best products.

Safety and side effects

According to the research, CBD is a safe substance with few and minor side effects. The most common issues reported in studies include:

  • Tiredness and drowsiness
  • Diarrhea and nausea
  • Low blood pressure and lightheadedness
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Dry mouth

CBD can also interact with many prescription drugs, so it’s best to talk to your doctor before using it.

Having said that, these and other potential side effects of CBD seem to be associated with very large oral doses of pure CBD. This means they’re unlikely to happen for most CBD users.

Legality

Hemp derived CBD products (with 0.3% or less THC) are federally legal in the United States. However, a few states have more restrictive laws. Some ban CBD completely or only allow THC free products, so it’s best to research the particular state you’re curious about.
