Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating component of cannabis.

CBD oil and other CBD products are widely used to relieve different kinds of pain, including migraines and other types of headaches.

Unfortunately, there’s little research into the effects of CBD on headaches. However, studies of whole-plant cannabis, which carries THC and CBD as the main ingredients, have shown positive results. This means CBD might help.

But it’s not easy to find the right CBD product with so many options. To help you make an educated choice, we researched and compared leading brands to find the best CBD products for headaches.

What does science say about CBD and headaches?

There are currently no studies looking at the effects of pure CBD or CBD-rich hemp extracts on headaches. Having said that, studies of whole cannabis, which contains THC and CBD, are promising:

  • In one 2020 study, 94% of 699 study participants who smoked or vaped whole dried cannabis flower saw an improvement in headaches and migraines
  • In another 2020 study, people smoking or vaping cannabis flower or concentrates saw improvements in headache severity
  • In a 2016 study, 85.1% of the 121 study participants who took used inhaled, edible, or topical cannabis products experienced fewer migraines and some were able to stop migraine attacks when they happened
  • A 2017 review on the use of cannabis for headaches concluded that “it appears likely that cannabis will emerge as a potential treatment for some headache sufferers.”
  • A 2018 review concluded that cannabinoids may help with chronic pain

These findings suggest that CBD could be one of many ingredients in cannabis that contribute to headache relief. However, it’s far too early to recommend CBD on its own and more studies are needed.

How we chose these products

We review and compare hundreds of CBD products from dozens of brands based on their hemp quality, third-party test results, reputation, price, and other criteria.

We also consider factors relevant to headaches. Most notably, research suggests that THC and terpenes play a role in the headache-relieving effects of cannabis.

This means that full-spectrum CBD products, which contain terpenes and a small amount of THC, are best suited for headache relief.

Here’s a full explanation of how we choose products for our best lists. We also use an unbiased ranking system to rate brands and products out of 100 points.

How to choose the best CBD for headaches

With so many options, it can be hard to choose the right CBD product for headaches. Here are key tips to help you make an educated choice:

  • Third party testing: Reputable brands send their products for testing at an independent lab to verify their safety and CBD content. You should only buy third party tested products.
  • Consumption method: CBD can be taken in different ways, each with its advantages and weaknesses. For example, vaping CBD is a popular option if you’re looking for immediate relief.
  • Type of CBD: There are three types of CBD; isolate, full spectrum, and broad spectrum. Full spectrum is considered the most effective.
  • Dosage: The right CBD dosage for headaches is different for everyone. You should start with a small dose (10-15 mg) and raise it slowly. The next time you shop for CBD, you can match your dosage to a product with the right potency.

We also have a detailed guide for a full explanation of how to find reputable CBD companies and choose the best product for yourself.

Safety and side effects

CBD has been extensively studied, confirming that it’s a safe compound with few and minor side effects. Its most common side effects include:

  • Tiredness and drowsiness
  • Diarrhea and nausea
  • Low blood pressure and lightheadedness
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Dry mouth

CBD also has the potential to interact with many prescription drugs.

However, these and other side effects were only reported by studies administering large doses of pure CBD. This means regular CBD users are unlikely to experience them.

Still, it’s best to talk to your doctor before using CBD, especially if you’re using prescription medications for headaches.

Legality

CBD products derived from hemp (cannabis containing 0.3% or less THC) are legal in the United States. However, you also have to be aware of individual state laws. Although most align with federal policy, some ban CBD or only allow products with zero THC.
