cbdMD is a North Carolina based company that sells CBD products online and in over 3,000 stores across the United States. Founded in 2015, cbdMD has made its name in the CBD industry by founding National CBD Day and National Hemp Day. The company targets a variety of consumers via partnerships with prominent athletes, pop culture media company Barstool Sports, and even with celebrity felines. Over the years cbdMD has been honored with awards for their products, including being named one of the best CBD producers in America by High Times, a long running, world renowned publication that provides consumers with information concerning cannabis cultivation, cannabis products, and regulatory issues.
cbdMD was given an overall score of 7/10 on transparency, accuracy, and reputation. Transparency appears to be a pitfall for cbdMD (sub rating: 5/10). At its foundation, the company website supplies adequate information on company leadership, means of communication, and contact information. When looking at the product information on labels and on the website, the company provides information on CBD content, the amount of CBD per serving, the consumption preferred method, and use instructions. However, the company falls short in providing easily accessible information regarding extraction and third-party lab results.
Additionally, the information on the FAQ page is targeted towards those seeking general knowledge on CBD that is not specific to cbdMD. Information specific to cbdMD products (such as shipping, return policies, and other logistical information) is located on other pages that can only be accessed by using the lower bar of the website.
cbdMD received a slightly higher rating for accuracy (sub rating 7/10). When reviewing the products, it was noted that the description of the capsules was missing information on excipient ingredients. Additionally, the tincture label stated “one dropperful” was equivalent to a full dose of 1 mL. When testing the product, the dropper would never fill past 0.75 mL, resulting in the user having to use multiple droppers to obtain a full, single dose. Reviewing the COA revealed no microbiological impurities but did show the CBD content for the selected product was slightly lower than what is advertised on the label (9.4 mg vs. 10 mg).
Despite all of the above information, cbdMD has a great reputation in the CBD industry, due to its tenure in business, strategic marketing, partnerships, and product accolades (sub rating 10/10). The reputation of cbdMD was able to lift the overall transparency, accuracy, and reputation score to 7/10.

Manufacturing Process
Information on the manufacturing processes is difficult to find on cbdMD’s website. After researching the company and reaching out to the company directly, cbdMD explained all hemp used in all cbdMD products is grown in Kentucky and Colorado but would not provide a link or name to substantiate registration in either state. Additionally, we were unable to confirm if the company or the grow sites adhere to GMP or USDA standards. All cbdMD products are considered broad spectrum and utilize CO2 for extraction. CO2 can adjust its natural solvent properties with pressure changes, allowing for the extraction of various cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, etc.) and terpenes from the hemp plant. Further, compared to other substances that may be used for extraction, CO2 has a lower thermodynamic threshold to achieve its supercritical state. Because of this, the risk of compromising components intended for extraction is reduced.
The company uses the third party, SC Laboratories, to test all products. SC laboratories is an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, meaning the lab can produce accurate and precise data results. ISO 17025 is considered the gold standard in testing laboratories and any products with legitimate results from an ISO 17025 company are reputable. When shopping for CBD products, it is important for brands to provide a COA to consumers. cbdMD does not post a certificate of analysis COA) for every product on its site, nor does the company send the latest lab results with each product shipment. However, the company does post a single COA for a CBD isolate on the website.
I reached out to the company to see if the staff would be able to provide a CoA for one of the products purchased. Within 15 minutes, the company was able to deliver the latest CoA for my product.
I was able to verify the CoA was legitimate via QR code scanning but was unable to review any additional data online due to cbdMD designatinging the results as private.
Additionally, I was unable to confirm if the CoA was from the same batch as the product I received. The cannabinoid test results I was provided showed no THC, an analysis consistent with either an isolate or a broad-spectrum product. The product being tested is marketed as containing 10 mg of CBD per unit. However, the lab results showed a slightly lower concentration of 9.4 mg of CBD per unit. While a lower quantity of active matter was noted, it is still within the 10% threshold that most people consider an acceptable variance.
From oral tinctures to bath bombs, there is a wide variety of products offered for adults at cbdMD along with CBD infused products for your furry friend. All products offered at cbdMD are made via a hybrid broad spectrum manufacturing process. Broad spectrum CBD oil is created using CO2 to extract both CBD and terpenes from the hemp plant. After the initial extraction, cbdMD further processes the oil to to create a CBD isolate. In the following step, they mix the CBD with the terpene fraction and MCT oil to create the final product. This allows consumers to experience 99% pure, full plant CBD while still benefiting from the terpenes and other non-psychoactive components of the cannabis plant. cbdMD does not appear to offer any coupons, samples, special discounts for selected populations, or bundles on the site. Additionally, cbdMD offers free shipping (3 to 7 business days), low-cost UPS Ground shipping ($4.95 for a 3 to 5 business day delivery) and UPS Select shipping ($7.95 for 2 to 3 business day delivery).
Immediately after ordering, cbdMD will send an order confirmation to the email provided, including a detailed order summary, payment, billing information, shipping information, and an order confirmation number. Shipping occurred more quickly than expected; Within 2 hours, I received an email notification that my package had already shipped and was provided a UPS tracking number. The package arrived within the guaranteed time frame in a plain, brown, box discretely labeled with “Cure Based Development” as the sender. When opening the package, I encountered brown packing paper laying over the purchased items. Aside from the premium CBD oil tincture, none of the items were bubble wrapped. In the bottom of the package, cbdMD included an invoice detailing the products shipped.
Customer support is available via several avenues at cbdMD. Those needing assistance can contact the company by telephone (1-800-973-3984), email (support@cbdmd.com), online contact us form (cbdmd.com/support), or by live chat located on the bottom right of each page on cbdmd.com. I reached out to customer service to learn more about the manufacturing process used to create the product and was quickly connected to an agent in under a minute. The agent was courteous and quick to respond with an initial answer. However, whenever I asked for clarification or more information, there would be a 3-5 minute pause before a response was received. During the pause, I was never told the customer service agent was still there or that it would be a moment. As a result, I was unsure if the conversation ended or if the customer service representative had just stepped away to find the answer. Luckily, it was the latter and after a few minutes I had received the information requested.

cbdMD offers many broad-spectrum CBD products. In this section, we will review four of the major products offered by cbdMD.
Premium CBD Oil Tincture review
The premium CBD oil tincture is a clear, transparent oil made from CBD, MCT oil, and may include a flavor extract depending on the product selected. The flavor extract utilized by cbdMD does a great job of masking the CBD flavor. When testing the berry flavor, it tasted like a berry-infused water and left little to no aftertaste.
cbdMD offers a wide variety of strengths of CBD oil tincture, ranging from 300 mg to 5000 mg per 30 mL bottle (or 10 mg to 250 mg per dose) and 1000 mg to 1500 mg per 60 mL container (or 16.6 mg to 25 mg per dose).
Dosing is flexible; cbdMD asserts the premium CBD oil tincture can be utilized twice daily or on an as needed basis. It is always recommended to consult with your healthcare professional to discuss which CBD products may be beneficial, as well as deciding upon a recommended daily dose. Prior to administration, the bottle must be shaken well. After shaking, the user should administer one mL or one dropper full. The labeling does not specify where to administer the oil (on the tongue, under the tongue, etc.) and does not specify if there is a need to hold the oil in the mouth for a certain amount of time prior to swallowing. The dropper included in the package is labeled in 0.25 mL increments to help users measure a dose. One dose is advertised as 1 mL or one dropperful. However, when trying to use the dropper, I was never able to get any oil past the 0.75 mL mark. As a result, I had to fill the dropper up twice. If users are not careful, they may believe they are receiving a full dose (a “dropperful”) and experience a subtherapeutic response
Premium CBD Oil Capsules review
The premium CBD oil capsules are white and odorless. When opening the capsule, there is a cream to light brown paste indicative of CBD. Like most of its products, cbdMD lists CBD and MCT oil as the two ingredients in the capsule. Unfortunately, cbdMD does not list the ingredients used to make the capsule itself. This may be concerning for consumers who have dietary restrictions or those who require vegetarian vs. gelatin-based capsules for religious or personal reasons. Premium CBD oil capsules are available in 30 or 60 capsule quantities with doses ranging from 15 mg to 50 mg per capsule (or 450 mg to 3000 mg per bottle).
cbdMD recommends using the CBD oil capsules twice daily or on an as needed basis. When taking the capsule, the capsule went down smoothly with a small glass of water. Although cbdMD does not specify the target population, cbdMD cautions the product is not intended or pregnant or lactating mothers.

Recover CBD Inflammation Cream is available packaged in either a tub or a squeeze bottle in either 300 mg/60 mL, 750 mg/120 mL, or 1500 mg/120mL quantities.
Recover CBD is made from a variety of ingredients, including CBD, Vitamin B6, Organic Arnica Flower Extract, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Histamine Dihydrochloride, and an array of complementary oils. The company recommends applying a generous amount of cream to the area experiencing discomfort up to four times per day for ten days. After ten days, users can reapply as needed. When applying, users should massage the cream into the skin until fully absorbed. The cream is light to the touch and smoothly glides onto the skin. The formula quickly absorbs and does not leave any oily residue. Additionally, the product has a subtle, pleasant smell that is calming and adds to the overall experience.
