An 80-year-old British woman who smoked an average of nearly 70 packs of cigarettes a year for the majority of her life has doctors praising the potential of CBD as a cancer treatment. A study released this week shows the patient used the cannabinoid to drastically shrink a cancerous lung tumor over the span of a couple years, despite continuing to smoke cigarettes during that period.

According to the study, from England’s National Health Service, the unnamed patient took CBD oil between two and three times a day from June 2018 to February 2021 instead of trying radiation and chemotherapy to treat her tumor. Doctors believe the CBD could have helped shrink her tumor to a quarter of its original size — from 41 millimeters to 10 millimeters.

The three physicians who conducted the study did not guarantee CBD was solely responsible for the 80-year-old woman’s miraculous recovery, but wrote that “a possible connection exists” and noted the example as a potentially promising sign for CBD oil’s effect on cancerous tumors.

“The limited number of case reports appear to show that CBD oil can have positive effects on tumor reduction,” wrote Drs. Kah Ling Liew, Ermanno Capuano and Bernard Yung. “More research is needed to identify the actual mechanism of action, administration pathways, safe dosages, its effects on different types of cancer and any potential adverse side effects when using cannabinoids.

“The potential for cannabinoids to be used as an alternative to augment or replace conventional primary cancer treatments definitely justifies further research.”

The patient’s CBD oil supplier told researchers that the active THC-to-CBD ratio in her oil was roughly equal, meaning the psychedelic compound found in marijuana may have also contributed to her recovery. Researchers said in the case study that they could not verify the entire list of ingredients in the woman’s oil. The study notes she also reported taking varying dosages, which makes detailing a full treatment regimen more difficult.

This week’s CBD success stories is just the latest in a countless number of tales in which users claim the cannabinoid has helped with a variety of illnesses. The most common benefits include relief from anxiety, insomnia and joint pain.
