Why you can trustlogo

  • Leafreport's mission is to provide accurate, objective, and valuable content for CBD, which is why we're transparent about our review process  and  how we rate products and brands. We may receive compensation. Here’s how we make money.
  • Our review is consumer-focused only and we do not check or take a stand regarding medical effects.
  • Statements regarding CBD products have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Please advise your physician prior to each use of CBD.

The Bottom Line

My review of Big Sky Botanicals CBD is very good because of their hemp quality, testing accuracy, and brand transparency. There is some room to improve, however, concerning their lack of definitive FAQs, pricing, and limited product catalog. They do offer free shipping with a $50 order minimum, and include a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee on all orders.

Big Sky Botanicals offers CBD products that are available in tinctures, softgels, edibles, topicals, skin care, and a pet item. Their products range from 5 mg to 2250 mg potencies, priced from $3.95 to $179.95. They have an average price point of $.13 per mg of CBD, meaning that their product prices are higher than average when compared to other organic brands in the market.

The accuracy variances for five of the Big Sky Botanicals products were under the acceptable 10% limit, with one product testing above the 10% variance. All of their products passed standard purity testing for residuals, solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, microbials, and other contaminants.

Pros: Cons:
  • Organic, non-GMO, kosher products
  • Centralized lab testing hub
  • Lifetime Charter Buyer Club
  • Referral program; subscribe and save discounts
  • Higher than average pricing for organic products
  • No FAQ section on main website
  • One accuracy variance exceeded 10% limit
  • No military discount

Methodology

  • Read our methodology for more details about ranking and our review process.

    Data Collection and Rating

In our review process, we receive CBD products directly from the brand to personally review ourselves, so we can give you an accurate idea of the packaging, potency, taste, smell, feel, and overall experience of each product. We also discuss the company’s shipping and returns policy.
Another important step we take is reviewing each individual product for details such as the certificate of analysis to assess the CBD level and CBD variance, THC level, and contaminants.
We take all factors into account and give each CBD brand and each CBD product a score for each parameter.
All of the information we collect is generated into a concise, easy to read review and put into our extensive database. Keep in mind, our reviews are never intended to substitute or act as medical advice.

    Product DataBase

Our database collects key information for each product, including CBD product prices, potencies, third-party lab test results, flavors, additional ingredients, hemp quality, extract types, product variety, and more.
We then use all of this combined data to give each brand and product a standardized rating out of five points.

    Brand Review Process

There are many factors we consider when we review the quality, integrity and products of a CBD brand. We rate each brand on several factors including:

    • Transparency & accuracy. It is important that a CBD brand is forthcoming with who makes up their team, their mission, manufacturing process, and lab reports. Also, we look for the accuracy of the CBD and THC levels in the products’ lab reports.
    • Hemp quality. Hemp quality can be a deciding factor between a good CBD brand and a great CBD brand. We look for organic and sustainable farming methods with attention to detail in each manufacturing step.
    • The variety of products they offer. We like to see several CBD product types and flavors.
    • Customer service. It is essential that each CBD company has multiple ways to connect to customer service to ask questions. We look for speedy and complete responses.
    • Price and discounts. Competitive pricing is an important aspect of being a top-rated CBD brand. We also look for discount options and ways to save on your order.

    Market Reports

Another way Leafreport stands out from other CBD review websites is our evidence-based market reports. For each one, we purchase different types of CBD products and send them for independent lab testing to check whether their levels of CBD and other cannabinoids match the label.

    Information Updates

Writers and editors conduct our reviews and our database on an annual basis but continually make updates throughout the year. We maintain frequent contact with brands and highlight any changes in offerings.

    The Review Team

Our review team is made up of a wide chain of qualified CBD review writers, some with medical degrees, some with statistics backgrounds, others with ample experience in the CBD arena. Each and every one of our CBD reviews are approved by our medical reviewer before being published on our website to ensure all information is accurate.

    Conflicts of Interest

While Leafreport does have partnerships with many of the reviewed brands, we manage potential conflicts of interest by maintaining a wall between our content and business operations. This wall is designed to prevent our writers and the review process from being influenced or impacted by our business partnerships. This way, all reviews can provide an unbiased review that serves the interests of our users.

    About the Company

Established in 2018 by Brian Frank and Vince Arnone, Big Sky Botanicals wanted to start with a streamlined product catalog to make the buying experience easier for customers, according to the website. Based in Colorado, Big Sky Botanicals uses only organic farming practices when crafting their organic broad spectrum CBD products to ensure freshness and premium quality.

According to the company website, they work with their partner farmers to harvest at optimum growth times to ensure customer satisfaction with the final product. Big Sky Botanicals is committed to innovation, and Co-Founder Brian Frank also pioneered the “less is best” approach to fueling athletes.

    Transparency

Independent CBD testing is a vital quality and safety control measure to ensure that the labeled amounts of CBD and THC are very close to the contents of each final product a customer receives. All of the products in my Big Sky Botanicals order were third party tested for CBD and THC potency and were purity tested for pesticides, solvents, heavy metals, and other foreign contaminants.

Customers of this brand will immediately notice that all independent lab results are available online through the “Lab Reports” link, labeled by batch number:

At Leafreport, we order and test the products ourselves

    Accuracy

Using the batch numbers and the company’s “Lab Results” link, it was easy to match the products with the independent third party lab reports provided. As far as the highest accuracy variance in this order, the 750 mg softgels tested as containing 486.8 total mg of CBD or 16.21 mg of CBD per softgel, which represents a 35.16% accuracy variance, higher than the acceptable 10% limit.

The lowest accuracy variances were found in the Big Sky Botanicals organic, 500 mg broad spectrum topical balm and the 250 mg tincture, which both tested with an accuracy variance of 0%, which is far below the 10% variance limit allowed and highly accurate, as seen here in the lab report for the 250 mg tincture:

At Leafreport, we order and test the products ourselves

All products were confirmed by independent third party testing to contain less than the legal 0.3% limit of THC, and all purity tests for heavy metals, residual pesticides, and microbes were passed.

    Reputation

In their two years of operation, Big Sky Botanicals has steadily grown their consumer base through successful social media campaigns and user generated reviews, according to the company website. They claim to focus on “providing a full line of top quality, effective, and reliable hemp derived products at fair prices ” but their testing and pricing do not directly reflect this goal.

They are committed to transparency, according to the “Why Big Sky” section online that is accessible through the main menu, and although inaccurate on potencies, Big Sky Botanicals is indeed transparent in that they provide both good and bad accuracy results for customer viewing.

    Manufacturing Process

They are a legal, authorized grower of certified organic, broad spectrum hemp, sourced from Colorado using regenerative farming practices:

At Leafreport, we order and test the products ourselves

Their products are manufactured in a GMP compliant facility. Big Sky Botanicals uses a supercritical CO2 extraction method to safely remove cannabidiol from their organically grown hemp. They further use a proprietary water soluble, nanoemulsion technology to formulate their Hydro tincture and their softgels.

All of the Big Sky Botanicals CBD product formulations are plant based and use 100% organic, non-GMO ingredients, containing no pesticides, fertilizers, or synthetics of any kind, according to the company. They formulate all of their CBD products with easily digestible MCT oil as the carrier for maximum absorption by the body.

They offer premium quality organic, broad spectrum CBD that is available in tinctures, topicals, gel capsules, gummies, and a pet product. Their products range in potency from 5 mg to 2250 mg, with few potencies in between. With an average price point of $.13 per mg of CBD, Big Sky Botanicals is higher priced than comparable organic brands.

    Big Sky Botanicals CBD Tinctures

These broad spectrum tinctures are CO2 extracted, and the company suggests that consumers start with a dose of ½ to 1 full dropper, which is 1 ml. There are visible measuring marks on the dropper which makes precise dosing easy. They are formulated with MCT oil for easy digestion. The Big Sky tinctures come in natural and two flavored varieties, and are recommended by the company for oral or sublingual use only.
